The Princess meets The Princesses

A group of us ventured in to the city see The Princess and the Frog at the Ziegfield Theater. The film was simply delightful. Good old fashioned 2d animation we all grew up watching. The story and music were amazing. Plan to go see it, you won't be disappointed. Afterwards we went to the Ultimate Disney Experience at the Roseland ballroom. The children were able to meet all the princesses and play in the Bayou Adventure.

Happy December

Started our Lego Advent calendar yesterday, can't show a picture of it yet. I did not put the SD card back in the camera and was unable to locate it.

This morning I asked the princess if she' seen it. She said she had and that she taken it but couldn't recall where she'd put it. I'm telling you the apple didn't fall far from the tree.

Much calmer start of the day today, yesterday we missed the bus when created a serious of rather tense moments for everyone. I'm going to go look in the princess' secret lair for the SD card. Later ;-)

The hottest toy on the planet...or at least our house

We just love to have fun. Spent Black Friday morning creating this year's hottest toy on the planet. Using Lego's,happy meal build a bears and beanies babies and a britax train set. The princess constructed a New York City themed play set complete with a of monkey a top of a building. This is another one of a kind creation that will be on display at my home throughout the holiday season or until the princess decides to change it. Enjoy. Going to set up the Lego Advent calendar then do some Cyber Monday shopping.

Taking the bus and more

I know, I know you've all been waiting patiently for this installment. The princess changed schools a few weeks ago,the first week, especially the first day was unforgettable. I dropped her off in the morning; she was to return by bus for the very first time, but things went awry(surprised?).

I waited at the stop with the other parents, the bus arrived, the driver appeared rather distraught and asked was I waiting for the princess. Seems she was discovered on another bus once the run was over. Bus driver 1 radioed bus driver 2 informing the driver that I was at the stop waiting, driver number 2 was going to bring her to me.

Okay,I'm cool, she wasn't inadvertently left in the bus yard or anything. She arrived a few minutes later, her usual zippy self. I called the school to let them know everything was fine. We go home...end of the story, well not exactly.

She mentioned that she saw the sibling of a dance class member on the bus. I ran into the parent a few days later, the parent mentioned her child mentioning that the princess was on the bus but the parent dismissed this as (she didn't know we'd moved). I ask the princess about the bus encounter again, she managed to put herself on the wrong bus that day;seems she was talking to sibling of the dance class member. That's my girl.

Two other noteworthy things happened that week she got invited to a birthday party and attended a class Halloween party that had been postponed the week before. Oh to be 5 again.

In case you were wondering...

As some of you are aware we moved recently. That's why there have been very few posts of late. Now that we're settled and back to our normal craziness look forward to more posts. Highlights of the past few weeks including the first day at a new school/riding the bus and more. Stop back tomorrow.

Nearly late

Made it to school today by the skin on our teeth arriving just as the music teacher started playing the national anthem on the piano. I stopped, but the princess ran down the hall to get to class. Too bad that in her haste she left me holding her backpack and lunch box. a moment later, while the anthem was still being played she emerged from her classroom(with that embarrassed smile we've all had at some point) to retrieve her belongings. I was so proud, I wanted dive under the greeter's desk.

I asked her later if they stood silently during the anthem in class each morning. She replied "Yes, of course we do Mommy."

Halloween parade that almost wasn't

The local kids costume parade scheduled for Saturday was cancelled due to the forecast calling for inclement weather. Took the princess to the movies instead.

The fall fest continued on Sunday and many children were present both in and out of costume. All who wanted were treated to goodies provided by local merchants. The kids had a great time dancing, visiting the petting zoo and going on the rides. Tried some of the pulled pork.

The princess dressed as Tinkerbell. I expect many costume changes between now and Saturday, the big one. The captain will be escorting the princess on this years candy quest. Due to work conflicts he's never been able to go with her, wonder what he'll wear.

Invisible Dogs

Watching this video brought back fond memories of a family vaction where my sisters and I got invisible dogs and walked them through the airport ncluding customs before boarding our flight home, alas we had to check then at the gate but it was fun while it lasted.

The princess has been talking about an invisible dog since she read about one in a book recently. I'll have to look around for one of these for her. Wonder if I could bring one on a cruise ship?

Recommended Reading

"I see London, I see France, I see the first ladies under pants." No, the princess did not say this. It is the opening line of Craig Ferguson's autobiography "American On Purpose. The princess overheard me read the opening line to a friend at the library so now she's saying it.

About the book, it's a well written account of The Late Late Show hosts darkly irreverent journey from Glasgow to Hollywood. You'll have to read it yourself to find out exactly what Mrs Bush was wearing that evening.

Things the princess said to me

"If I don't get some dental floss right now my back is going to bleed." That I'd like to see,not really.

"There are ice cream stains on my brownie, I'd like another in a separate dish" Talk about foods not touching. If she had't been at school I'd swear she was watching "The View."

"I only asked once, nicely and didn't nag, can I have"it" now?" This question I get regularly

Eeny, meeny, miney,mo tell me where I'm supposed to go

Really wanted to go and meet Craig Ferguson at his reading/signing of American on Purpose. If I'd missed open house night at school, the princess would never had let me hear the end of it. I'll have to wait for the book to come into the library next month. Going to catch him now on Letterman. Late night TV causes me to be sleep deprived.

There's still time to enter the essay contest.

Fashion week,Lady Gaga and more

OK, I know what you're thinking, fashion week. What's going on here. Well it's fashion week at my house everyday. She has been unveiling her latest collection, including accessories, one outfit at a time. Her taste is eclectic provided it's pink.
Lady Gaga is now the front runner for the Halloween costume. Where am I ever going to find that nest mask from the VMA's?
Captain Chaos and I are celebrating our wedding anniversary this week. The princess thinks we're having a wedding ceremony and asked some of her friends to be flower girls. Sorry to disappoint her but we don't have anything like that planned.

What does beige smell like?

The princess told me yesterday I smelled good and she smelled beige. She wanted to use whatever I was using. The combination of soap, shampoo and deodorant must have been appealing to her. At last she was giving me a compliment, what a good girl.

Saturday, September 12, 2009

The week went well enough. The princess' dance teacher asked her how her first week of 1st grade went. Her reply "Good, I didn't get in trouble yet." That's my girl. She has learned that the goal for the day is to stay off the evening news.

Pretty typical week...school,dance school, skating school and a few playdates sprinkled in. I don't think I missed anything.

Lunch:Race Car shaped chicken fingers, dinner roll, golden corn niblets, fresh fruit/fruit cup, choice of milk. Not the school lunch you remember.

Here we go again

I'll be waking the princess shortly. Wished the weather was better. Nothing beats a rainy day to start off the school year.

The night before school starts

T'was the night before school starts and at my house
my princess was wound up and being a louse.

she was squirmy and anxious and really uptight
nothing a warm bath won't fix,right?

as story time approached I called to her higness
told it was time to get out and put on her nighty

She had other thoughts when I entered the bath
I was greeted with a gigantic splash.

I was not amused but contained my wrath
next time she'll shower as this was her last bath.

"Get out of the tub" I hollered, she scampered off to her room
waiting to see what might await her upon my return.

Much to her surprise I continued our routine
We read several books then she went off to dream.

today is over, tomorrow she starts first grade
o'night to all, make it a great day.

119 Days until New Years Eve

Oh, what I meant was 6 days until school starts; silly me. There will be celebrating just the same though. Missed out on meeting with the mommy mafia, sitter canceled at the last minute.

7 days and counting

Got the letter today with the princess' classroom assignment for the upcoming school year. FYI she's with the teacher I don't know from dance school. There are only three first grade teachers and two of them have children in the same dance school the princess attends. I mentioned this in a post a while back. If I was a gambler I would have cleaned up on that. She's chosen her outfit and I have everything else ready.

She's pooped, we went to the park twice today. The weather was much too nice to stay home. Ran in to a mommy from the amusement park adventure. We chatted while the kids played. The princess was trying to recruit a parent to be the assistant to the fire breathing dragon in their game; No takers. I missed the head hunting as I was in the restroom. I usually get asked to be the evil witch or wicked step monster in these games. Stop back tomorrow...

Happy September 1

Here we are, counting down to the beginning of the next school year. The princess goes with MIL on Tuesday's. Today she informed her grandmother that this would be the last Tuesday they would be getting together,(even though she doesn't start school until Wednesday.) She says she will be too busy preparing for school LOL. She's going to even more surprised next Tuesday when she goes with her grandmother. LOL

School supplies part deux

Went to Wal Mart to pick up a few things. Had Grandma P and the princess along for the shopping adventure; always lots of fun.

My shopping list 1 hair brush,1 pkg foam rollers,1 bottle de-tangler,1 pkg socks and a jug o' milk. More things magically appeared in the cart before the end of the trip. 1 back pack,1pr sneakers,2 pr glittery leggings, bd gift for nekoampydrew(I know you read this dude, don't worry the leggings are not your gift) ;-)

The princess doesn't forget anything, ever. As we were leaving the store she says this is where I yakked. That was a long time ago. I'm lucky I can remember what I had for breakfast, but I forgot the socks. Looks like another trip is in order.

14 days...you thought I forgot

Two weeks and school begins again. The princess took today off,she said she's "ill" That is not a term that use. Don't know where she got that from. We spent the evening reading some picture books. She gave me "Not Norman A Goldfish Story". Her reasoning was to remind me she still wants a pet. Frankly,I'm not ready for that and neither is she. Remember Sluggo? She can go have supervised visits with grandma's betta,Fish.

Altatoids & the skate date

The princess went to the skating rink to skate with a long time friend this afternoon. She asked if they could have some peppermint altatoids(as she calls them) aka Altoids's(the small square ones);she's had them before and knows how strong they are, apparently he didn't. Poor kid looked as if she had given him jalapenos. He recovered quickly, children are wonderfully resilient, aren't they? She suggested they try the cinnamon ones next time; (I wont even try those.) The kids had good time skating in spite of the altatoid incident.

"Acting Out" at the library

Fabulous Friday. At the library as the princess is attending a program given by Lee Knight/Books Alive. I will attempt to catch up on some work while I'm here.

Now on to the show...

The children spent 1.5 hrs rehearsing a show for the parents to watch. Simply fantastic. The presentation was based on two Laura Numeroff stories "If you give a Moose a Muffin" and "If you give a Pig a Pancake." There was singing, dancing and improvisation. The children also built the scenery.

We've attended many of Ms. Knight's programs and never been disappointed.Check out Ms. Knight's website www.Lee-Knight.com for information on upcoming events.

Crabby Patty

Made a crab cake recipe I found on a box of Kellogg's Corn Flake Crumbs. The princess took a bite and told me she liked the one's from my friend's fish market better. I responded by telling her to pack a bag so she could go live there LOL; stab me in the heart. I thought they were good. Oh well.

21 days and counting

You've all been wondering what we've been up to. Chilling out for a few days. Went to the diner with some friends this afternoon. Ordered a black cherry soda/vanilla ice cream soda. Was given a chocolate soda/vanilla ice cream soda. At least the ice cream was right. Don't care much for chocolate soda. I could have sent it back but I don't believe in messing with the people that are preparing my food. Waitress just got a smaller tip for stupidity.

The princess spent yesterday with MIL.When they returned from their outing MIL shared this. While out shopping the princess found some pieces from a store decoration in the entrance. In the check out line, a customer suggested that she had removed the decoration from the entrance area. She looked him straight in the eye and told him he was spreading rumors and she didn't like it. His jaw dropped in astonishment by her response. He asked MIL how the princess is. She replied 5. His tween aged son just looked at him with embarrassment and sighed. Sorry I missed that moment.

Stop back tomorrow to hear all about the dentist and another trip to the movies

Read with a kid today

Taking a few moments from all the summer fun to post about something of importance to me,reading. As many of you are aware, I spent several years teaching in a rural Title 1 school (leaving when the princess was born).

Please visit First Book, a not for profit that provides children access to books. There is link on the side bar that will take you to their page. Got to go and read with the princess.

28 Days until school starts

The public library hosted the annual celebration for the children who completed their summer reading club goals. Activities included three inflatables;the fourth having an untimely deflation soon after the event began. There was one inflatable where the children wore a harness connected to a bungee and ran as far as they could before being pulled back. Too horizontal,LOL; I didn't understand the concept myself. The kids however couldn't get enough of it. Other activities included a DJ,magician and games.

Later on I called the captain to ask where some small hand tools might be found in his guy stash. He told me he got a flat tire on his bike going to work and asked me what I planned for dinner and would I bring him a plate. So off we went to deliver him a burger at work. I realized after getting in the car my shirt was inside out. Rather than going back in to fix it, I kept going. Ever have one of those moments where you go out and hope you don't run in to any one you might know? Well the captain noticed my wardrobe malfunction and quickly provided me a place to make the necessary adjustments. Good thing I had on underwear. As I ran into a coworkers of his who is also the mother of one of the princess' classmates.

Since I was feeling totally uncomfortable at this point I decided to make a stop at the grocery store where everyone know us by name. While we're there we run into another parent we know. I'm so happy to be home and in more comfortable clothing, eating some pop ems and drinking a glass of milk.

Went to the movies...don't tell the princess

Mom took me to the movies this aftenoon. We saw Julie & Julia, very funny. I will not spoil it for those of you who've not yet seen it. Streep,Tucci & Adams are just teriffic. Walk,no run to the theater, but not on an empty stomach.

I can't remember the last time I went to the movies with my mom, without an entourage of children.

Free Corn Muffins

Made a batch of corn muffins with the princess this morning. She wanted to leave them on the door steps of some of our neighbors. She has a book with a similar story. Several of the families we are friendly with are away so it wasn't a good time to leave anything.

She decided to take some to the local park to share with children she might meet. She placed four muffins in her bike basket and rode around announcing free muffins. She even had a few takers!

The dentist, the hair cutter & the ready mop

My day started out on a mission to find an elusive product. Six stores later I found what I am now calling the holy grail of home care products. Cleaning pads for a Clorox Ready Mop. I discovered an open box of the product in a grocery store. I purchased it and didn't really care if one or two were missing. I had visited two big box home improvements stores, a pharmacy and three grocery stores, all before 9:00AM. I was so blinded by my determination that I never considered purchasing another bottle of the floor cleaner which I later discovered had run low(inset the four letter word of your choice). There was no time to go back.

The princess went to visit a new dentist today. When it was time for her to be seen, she announced that she didn't need me and would being going in alone. I was surprised, but she does have some previous experiences dealing with health care professionals. The visit went well, she had a goody bag filled with stickers,a toothbrush and some little toys.

On to the hair cutter for a trim and some braids. Haircut went as well as can be expected. The princess doesn't really like to do this. When it was time for the braids, the woman stated making a large braid, the princess began to cry and said her ears were showing. She explained that her ears were private parts and mustn't be seen due to lack of earrings. This coming from a child who still removes most of her clothing upon entering the house. I stepped in and asked the stylist to make two smaller braids one on each side over her ears as had been done in the past. The princess never told the woman this, she just assumed the woman would know what she wanted. Lesson learned COMMUNICATE!

35 days until school starts

The princess is attending a program at the public library and I'm enjoying the quiet atmosphere and writing a bit until the battery runs out or the program is over, whichever happens first. We'll then be running off to pool school. Home for lunch, maybe get some work done the off to skating.

35 days and school starts. The princess will be attending 1st grade. The buzz on the play ground and the library is "which teacher will me child be with?" All seem good. Two have daughters that attend the same dance school as the princess and have seen her at her best and worst each Saturday morning for the past year. There are only three 1st grade teachers so unless there is a staffing change it's likely she'll be with one of them.

The program is over and we now have a 3ft tall gingerbread person to take home. The origami yesterday was easier to carry.

Monday, August 3, 2009

Whirlwind

The princess has been on a schedule with break neck pace. Friday and Saturday were spent preparing and participating in a dance program,Sunday was a skating exhibition. I'm exhausted...can't wait to see what the day brings.

While at the dance studio Saturday we met family members of Moo. Very exciting.

What does God have on her iPod?

Sorry if this seems disrespectful however the princess posed this question to me while driving to skating today. She was questioning whether or not god could hear everything which in turn prompted the question "What does God have on her iPod?" I told her every song that has ever been written. The princess has been obsessed with iPods lately. We don't have one but she has seen the ads on TV.
She insists that god is female, not male and will argue with anyone that suggests otherwise. I have no idea how she came to this conclusion and when I ask her about it she tells me that's just how it is.

German Chocolate Cake and Bunny Tracks

We celebrated FIL's birthday in style this evening complete with a German Chocolate Cake and Bunny Tracks Ice Cream. As we began to sing Happy Birthday the princess shouts "STOP" you're singing it wrong. She then gave a solo performance the Ting Tings version followed by the traditional rendition.

Leave it to the princess to point out that both the cake and ice cream were not to HER liking due to coconut and peanuts and lord knows what else. She ate grapes instead. We then played some games all prepared by the littlest hostess. I'm certain the evening wont be forgotten for some time to come.

B-I-N-G-oh

Met the gang at the park this evening to have some mommy chat while the kids tried to play bingo. I'm being nice when I say TRIED.

The princess and a friend gave up after 2 games not realizing there were prizes to be won. Another buddy played until she did win, then left to go on the playground with her swag in tow.

Of course my daughter not wanting to let an opportunity to get more stuff pass her by decides to rejoin the game. My little scavenger, just like the captain. Much to her disappointment she returned for the last two games and left empty handed much to my relief as she has enough stuff for a small village. Those of you who have visited my home can attest to that.

She asked me as we were leaving why didn't she win. Sometimes there just aren't words to appropriately respond to such an inquiry. WWYS? Don't hold back on your thoughts now,LOL.

New Skates

Captian Chaos, grandma and I took the princess over to the rink to practice using her new skates. Yippy. She was so excited she couldn't wait to tear up the ice. Now she just needs to learn how to tie them herself. Ever try to tie skates on a kid that wont sit still? Freshly sharpended no less.
Once the skates were properly installed on the princess she was just fine and I was breaking a sweat.

what an adventure!

Had a grand play date at an amusement park today! There were 7 moms and 9 kids in our entourage. The kids ran around and went on so many rides I lost count. The moms got a chance to visit in between escorting the little ones between the rides. The weather was great and the lines were short.

There were a few teary moments. The princess was too short to go on a water ride w/o an adult. She tried the tippy toes thing without success and was sent off the line. Although she's the oldest of the group, she's the smallest and not very accepting of it. I can't help it that she's the offspring of vertically challenged parents. She recovered quickly from her disappointment when she saw the younger sibling of one of the kids who was smaller than she was. She personally escorted him on several rides when she realized this. Her new BFF. She started asking for a little brother, again.

I get to hear that daily. Each evening she recites "Star light, star bright, the first star I see tonight...I wish for a big brother,a big sister,a medium brother, a medium sister, a little brother, a little sister, a puppy, kitten and a gold fish." She might get the fish, but after what happened to Sluggo I'm not so sure about that anymore.

Later in the day I decided to take them both on rides that they couldn't go on alone. The Ferris wheel and the water ride I mentioned earlier. I sat in the rear, the princess was in front of me and the little guy was in the front, unaware of what awaited him towards the end of the ride;an unexpected shower! Pool little guy wasn't the happiest camper.

We talked,we ate,we laughed and the kids had a great time too! Can't wait for our next adventure.

Skating is dangerous to my health

I have spent the past 24 hrs unable to stand up straight. While helping the princess up on a bench to adjust her skates I managed to do something to my back . Of course I put on my best mommy is not in pain (game face) so not to upset her.

She is working on swizzles and has asked when am I going to lace up my skates. Like that 's going to happen anytime soon. I explained to her that I didn't want to skate badly and spoil it for her. She tells me that's OK mommy if I can get myself up from the ice you can too. Thank you for the vote of confidence.

Sitting is painful, standing upright is painful and lying down, well that rarely happens unless of course I put on the skates and take a fall.

I Command a do over!

Went to the park for a community field day. After the tug o war the princes shouted "I command a do over!"The counselor looked at me in disbelief at what she heard. I explained the comment was meant for her and not me. LOL The community organization does a great job with kids. We've been going to the programs for a few years now. Moo was there watching, she's been going just about everywhere we've been.

My Cow Moo and Cowcakes

The princess and I had the pleasure of meeting My Cow Moo and her cowkeeper Kim Arezzi at a local event today. And I thought we were just going to meet Elmo and get our faces painted. What a treat! Moo and Kim recently published a story to teach children the importance about money and saving.

We now have a copy of "Moo Becomes a Cash Cow" as well a our very own cowpal Moo! I like that the book is eco friendly and 10% of the proceeds will go to Share Our Strength's Great American Bake Sale,http://gabs.strength.org/site/PageServer?pagename=GABS_homepage . Part of the proceeds from sales of Moo stuffed toys go to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and proceeds from the delicious snackage cowcakes go to charity as well. What a pleasant surprise.

Had a little chat with Kim and she told me she is a toymaker by trade. I mentioned our blog and asked her if she and moo wouldn't mind being the topic of a post to which she cheerfully agreed. Their website is http://www.mycowmoo.com/index.php ,their blog is http://www.theadventuresofmoocow.blogspot.com/ .

We will periodically post adventures including or new family member moo. She and the princess have redecorated the secret lair so everyone will be comfortable.

Don't forget there is one more day to post a comment for the Paper Culture giveaway.

Smores

One of the treats the princess served at our camp out was her interpretation of smores. Potato chips, marshmallows and starburst. Yummy. An inspired gourmet treat. After that we had a pinata filled with jelly beans and staburst.

Next we had a fashion show featuring designs made from bandannas and boas. Project Runway better watch out. We finished off the evening with story time. I'm pooped.

There's still time to get in on the Paper Culture gift card give away. Don't miss out!

Indoor camping

We're off on an indoor camping adventure. The princess has spent the better part of the afternoon preparing treats for us to enjoy. She has set up our camp site in the living room so that we have all the comfprts of home, TV & AC. Good thing that she didn't ask to camp outdoors, that's not exactly my thing. MY idea of camping is a blackout at the Hilton. I can't wait to see what she has in store for me. I'll report back soon.

The Paper Culture gift card giveway is going on now through Sunday night. Don't forget to post a comment.

Paper Culture Gift Card Give Away

Here it is faithful readers. My review of products from Paper Culture.

I was looking for thank you cards to send out after the princess recent dance recital. I wanted something different than the standard package of thank yous available in the store. So I went searching and discovered paper culture on another blog, the meanest mom.

The company has a line of cards including birth announcements, invitations, thank you cards and more. All designs can be personalized to suit your needs. Finished cards can be sent to you or to your list of recipients. Whats more through the end of the year the cost of delivery to your recipients is just the actual postage.

I looked through the website, found a design I liked and ordered a personalized proof which I had in a few days. The order was received in a few more days and I am absolutely delighted. My experience has exceeded my expectations and I'm hoping yours will too!

Another important thing about Paper Culture is that they use 100% post consumer paper in the products. How cool is that?

So when your looking for something out of the ordinary next time you need stationary consider Paper Culture. http://paperculture.com/

You have an opportunity over the next three days to win a $50 gift card for products from Paper Culture. What's the catch? Submit a comment to this post telling my why you want the gift card. It's that simple. All comments must be submitted no later than 11:59 PM 7/19/2009.

For more chances to win tweet this and or post on your blog!

I see that some of you did not id yourself in your responses that's cool but how I can I consider you for the gift card if I don't know to whom it would be sent?

Skating school and Pool school

Oh Happy Thursday. The order for paper culture has arrived! I will start the promotion tomorrow and it will run for through Sunday.

Very busy day for all. I'm ready for sleep but the princess isn't. The second session of pool school started to day. The princess is somewhat apprehensive about going off the diving board. Skating went well, she made it around the rink once, stayed pretty close to the boards.

She had a new experience today...the women's locker room. Couldn't take her outside in heavy skating tights, she would have melted. Since her highness insisted on wearing a skort I couldn't very well let her change in the restroom either. She was faking modesty as there were a few teenagers and their mother in the room. I quietly reminded her about what happened at the pool a few days ago,the false modesty ceased abruptly.

She says I drive too fast and it wore her head out.Yeah,right. Going to watch Royal Pains and see what kind of trouble the kind doctor finds himself with this week.

Stop back for the giveaway tomorrow.

Cookies and Cream

Another action packed day of fun and adventure. Pool school and a play date. Stopped at the grocery store to grab a few things. Needed some ice cream. wanted Edy's mint but the princess had other ideas. She points and blurts out Mom cookies and cream is on sale! My response "that darn school taught you how to read,my life is over now". I only said that because I recognized a teacher from her school who was within earshot and was observed to have a big grin on his face. My bad but I couldn't help myself.

The package from paper culture is in transit. I am tracking it through USPS. Can't wait for it to arrive. I know you are all waiting as well for me to post my review and open up the give away. Now go and finish up you wish list girls and boys.

Pool School Exhibition

There was an exhibition today at pool school. The princess had an audience and did she ever put on a show. Each child swam with the instructor several times. While waiting their turns poolside she was entertaining the spectators. I was hoping she wouldn't fall in to the pool.

Had to get more earplugs before class so she arrived with the captain in a two piece bathing suit. This was not the suit she had on when I left! She lifted up her top to shake off the water then realized what she'd done and you guessed it,she did it again. I glared at her in disapproval as only a mommy can do. As much a I wanted to go over to her I had to restrain myself from leaving the bleachers. There are some folks who have video of my kid being silly. Hope they're good at editing. I guess she knows Gypsy too well.

I was disturbed by some of the ads that ran after yesterday's post. I don't dare make any refernces about the name or type of creature again for fear similars ads. Until tomorrow...

Alas, Poor Sluggo, I knew him...

Borrowing the all too often misquoted lines spoken by Horatio when he discovers the skull of Yorick, the court jester in Hamlet. I must report the most untimely and unexpected demise of Sluggo the snail. It was just yesterday when I observed her/him hanging on the bamboo, nibbling leaves and sipping cool water.

OK enough of the drama...the pink princess told me that a snail is too delicate of a creature for her to be responsible for. This was of course after I discovered its little, lifeless body in the cage. Like it is a surprise? The surprise was that it lasted as long as it did.

On to other matters of importance. My order from Paper Culture is on the way. Once I've had a chance to look it over I will post a review right here on the blog and start the give away promotion for a $50 gift card good towards custom stationary of your choosing. Go visit their site http://www.paperculture.com/ to see what they have! Think about what you'd like and why since you'll have to do a little writing to win it.

Drop Dead Diva Sunday night TV

Just watched Drop Dead Diva on Lifetime. Too funny. Kind of like Legally Blonde meets Ugly Betty meets Heaven Can Wait with a little bit of The Practice and Boston Legal thrown in. Brooke Elliot is teriffic as Jane/Deb and Margaret Cho's Teri is priceless. It's fun watching Cho be serious. I wont spoil it for you, check it out. I can't wait until next week.

It's Sunday...Shhh,sluggo is sleeping

The only day when I can sleep late and I was awoken early. Well sluggo the snail is doing well, I actually got to see him/her roaming around it's habitat. The princess and I did some research and found out some basic care for the little creature. We googled garden sails and found this page http://www.kiddyhouse.com/snails/ Tried to snap a pic but sluggo is camera shy.

The princess had a breakfast playdate with the niece of a friend. The girls had never met before but seemed to get along well.

Got to run, The Laurie Berkner band is coming on shortly.

Don't forget. The giveaway will be posted sometime this week. Check back tomorrow.

Daddy...open your head

The pink princess and captain chaos went out for the afternoon. They took a long walk, enjoyed lunch and some window shipping together and I enjoyed some quiet time; well almost. I waded through a mountain of mail, paid some bills, prepared dinner and went to the grocery store.

When they returned I heard her say "Dad, you know you have to open your head." The captain explained that she was trying to convince him into purchasing a dress they'd seen while on their adventure. "Daddy doesn't buy clothes, that's mommy's job." She wasn't satified with his response and was attempting to get him to reconsider without success. You see they are both very determined, some might say stubborn.

We had family game night. Monopoly Jr. with the princess making up the rules. You know who won,LOL

Come back tomorrow as I may reveal the great give away. Hint it's something everyone can use.

Cool Thursday

I know you've been waiting all day to hear about the first day of Ice Skating lessons. The skating world better brace themselves, there's a new princess in town and she's fabulous. The one, the only, the incomparable pink princess. OK maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself, but how could I not?
She faked me out by choosing shades of purple today. The kids spent the lesson learning how to get up from the ice, marching in place on the skates and falling, a lot. Things I don't think I can even do anymore, except the falling. I consider myself skating challenged. When asked what she enjoyed most, her response was "everything". Afterwards she spent another 15 minutes or so venturing out on to the ice. Actually hanging on to the boards, something I am very good at.

Midway through pool school

We're halfway through pool school. Need to get more earplugs. I don't want to ask why they keep vanishing.

FYI The Laurie Berkner Band will be performing on Noggin, Sunday July 12 @ 7:00 PM EDT. The band is having a pajama party out this way on the 18th;haven't decided if we'll be attending yet. For more information go to http://www.laurieberkner.com/site/ and http://www.pajamaprogram.org/

Went to the park this afternoon. The princess and a new friend liberated a John Deere Gator Power Wheels from another park friend. I have to admit it was fun to watch the two little girls laughing as they drove off through the park. I know what you're thinking...this is how Thelma and Louise started.

On the next installment...ice skating lessons. Watch out.

Proper shoes

It's Tuesday, made it to the Hamptons and back with no direct encounters with citiots. The pink princess spent the afternoon recreating parts of "Fancy Nancy" followed by her creating a hand crafted a pair of proper shoes using white paper, crayons, markers, colored pencils and scotch tape.

Absolutely fabulous, one of a kind;wonder what I'd get for them on eBay. Much different than colored dental floss that she made one day last week.

We had planned to go to the park however the weather had other ideas. Got to observe my half full, red recycling can floating down the street. I rescued it once the rain stopped and the water receded.

"More is better, say yes! to the clutter" I just love that from "Fancy Nancy" Thank you Jane O'Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser.

Monday,already?

Today was the first day for the pink princess to report for her summer reading club. She chose to report on Goldilicious, the second sequel to Pinkalicious. If you've not read these she recommends you do so immediately or you will not be allowed to have any pink cupcakes for dessert. Next it was on to the park to see an outdoor movie sponsored by a local community group. The essence of "Skin So Soft" filled the air. We capped off the evening with some Popsicle firecracker pops. Oh happy summertime; a great time was had by all including the mosquitoes. Tomorrow I'm off to the Hamptons once again to play dodge the citiots.

Sluggo the snail

Took the princess to the park which is always an adventure. As with most children she likes to collect treasures. She found a small snail, placed it in her bug catcher cage and promptly added it to her princess garden upon returning home. This is the third snail she's put there, she names them all "Sluggo". The others have since left. Tomorrow is another installment of pool school.

A Happy 4th for all

Spent the day visiting with neighbors. Had deli style snacks,no fuss, no muss,no cooking. It's all good. Headed down to the beach to watch fireworks at dusk. A Good time was had by all. Need to go back to Sam's Club and get another bathing suit and more earplugs for the princess for pool school on Monday.

Send in the clowns

Just got back from our trip to the Big Apple Circus. We didn't tell the pink princess where we were going. She was so excited when we arrived and she saw that great big tent.

Our seats were ringside in the first row. The venue is intimate and there isn't really a bad seat in the house. The show included traditional circus acts including clowns, acrobats and trapeeze artists. The circus spends the fall and early winter in New York City but travels during the rest of the year. Catch it if you can.

The wizard of God and Tuto

Sat down to watch The Wizard of Oz last night on TCM. The princess has seen it before but had forgotten the title. She called it the wizard of God. She also kept calling Toto, Tuto. I didn't want to laugh out loud.

Pool school was a success, didn't lose any earplugs. Got to the library to sign up for the summer readng club. The princes wanted to read the first six book then and there. Slow down missy. The weather cut short our plans to take a bedtime walk. Tomorrow is another day. The captain and I are taking here to the circus, she'll be surprised.

Pool School

Today was the first day of swimming lessons or "Pool School" as the princess puts it. She has been looking forward to it for quite some time(since the final class last summer). Things went well except one of her earplugs got lost. She has to wear them; good thing I purchased multiple sets. I will have to purchase another bathing suit as the one I got last month no longer fits. Funny how that happened.

Got the go ahead from the captain to finalize the plans for our vacation. I'll leave now, lol. Next stop...you'll have to come back later to find out. Going trolling on the travel sites and eBay.

How captain chaos came to be

You're probably wondering how it is that captain chaos got his name. It's really a quite simple recipe 2 parts ADHD and 1 part OCD; stirred, not shaken makes for a very interesting personality.

Sunday at the library with the balloon sculptor

Went to the dedication of Sayville's new public library yesterday. What a magnificent building. There were tours of the facility, live music, refreshments and activities for the children including a balloon artist.

There was a procession through town of people passing the last book from the old library to the new library. "A History of Early Sayville" published in 1935 by Clarissa Edwards, a descendant of one of the founding families and founder of the Sayville Historical Society. Once at the new facility there was a color guard, raising of the American Flag and comments by library staff and local dignitaries and finally the ribbon cutting.

On the main floor there was a display of local items including a map of early landowners included was the property once owned by relatives of our extended family. Pretty cool.

The children's area has plenty of tables, computer workstations and an enormous artificial tree. The princess pointed it out to me as we were approaching the area. I told here the contractors left the tree and put the building around it. She tells me "Mommy don't you know it's fake!" She chose a book from the shelf,we sat together and read. Then proceeded to wait for a balloon sculpture. The wait was comparable to lines for certain theme park rides, but not as hot.

We toured the whole place of course. The stacks/adult area is on the top floor, followed by young adult, the central circulation desk on the main floor, the children's area is below that and the art gallery and meeting rooms are on the lowest level.

The princess wants to go visit every day. I think she's hoping the balloon guy might be there! Well it's time to get ready for another exciting day of adventure with the princess and captain chaos aka dad.

Loukoumades at the festival

Loukoumades.Messy, yummy, look it up. Had way too much fun today according to the princess.

75 days til school starts again

OK,I realize that school just ended for us today, but I couldn't resist. I sang "75 days til school starts again,75 days til school." The princess turns to me and sings "Thats's the day I go to first grade and you'll be happy again" My little angel. She asked now that school is over what is she going to do? I always have a plan...She'll wish she was back to school LOL.

The report card was very good except for Gym, which I'm having trouble with. It also came along with the supply list for September and an order form for an outside vendor that will deliver the supplies in August. Thanks, but I'll shop for it myself. I think I can do better than $61 for all of it. I'm still trying to figure out why they requested 4 boxes of zip lock bags and 4 packs of baby wipes. Sure seemed like there were a lot of unused supplies when I was there on Tuesday. When I was was teaching I was lucky to get a box of tissues

Tomorrow is the post recital dance class party and registration for summer programs at the public library. Swimming lessons start next week and ice skating the following week. Mommy and daddy day camp is in full swing! Thinking cool thoughts.

Now here's something really bizarre. My sister was having a problem with the septic system, the repairman quickly discovered the problem. A baseball was stuck up inside the system vent. How did a baseball get stuck in there? The vent is an 4" pvc pipe with an elbow that points downwards. None of my sisters kids play baseball, too passive for that group. Now if it was a hockey puck I would think one of them might have done it,but they're not little kids. Too bizarre.

Citiots

Traveled to Montauk,(the end) yesterday on business. The locals are fun,the citiots are not and it was a Wednesday. While driving through East Hampton, the land of the wannabes and never was'. I felt for a moment as if I was driving in NY City as people were driving creatively and leaning on their horns.

One of the people I met with yesterday commented on how having groceries delivered right to her home was a great convenience. She tries to avoid the stores during the season as the citiots are just unbearable. A woman in line was complaining that the locals should buy their groceries during the week so the weekenders weren't inconvenienced with long lines. I'm sure most do exactly that when possible but ice cream emergencies come up too!

Give me a break. While in college(a lifetime ago) I worked in a grocery store out there and most of the summer folk were demanding and unpleasant. My co-workers and I took great joy in calling the village police when customers were illegally parked the fire zone and denying them beer sales at 8:00AM on a Sunday morning. Even though we had a place out there I got along better with the locals than than the citiots. Can't wait for tonight's installment of Royal Pains on USA Network. Watch it if you haven't done so yet.

The princess and her dad have gone to lunch together so I can get some more work done. He took a small bouquet of home grown roses with him,how sweet is that? She loves flowers so I'm sure she enjoy them.

K-Grad Day

It was the princess' kindergarten graduation today at 10:00AM. She's been up since sunrise which is very unusual for her. I'm usually calling her to get up "the mommy bus/daddy bus is leaving and you'd better be on it." Our district has limited bus transportation. Elementary students have to be 2 miles from the nearest entrance. We are 1.8 miles and walking is not an option, but that's a whole other rant I'll save for another time.
The program was simply fabulous. The princess was front and center and having a great time with her classmates. They sang several songs, one was cuter than the other. We then joined some friends for lunch at the diner, french fries are my friend LOL. The princess had a classmate come for a play date and she was fast asleep at 4:15 PM.

After a short nap the princess was ready to run. We took her to "The habitrail" aka McDonald's PlayPlace. Coffee, apple pies, milk and ice cream! Then home to trip down memory lane to watch some videos.

She's still running like the energizer bunny. I need a nap, seriously.

Another opening,another show

Well yesterday was a whirlwind of activity. The princess and I went to get our hair done along with all the usual Saturday errands.

Viva Las Vegas was terrific, there was a good crowd. All of the kids did a great job. No costume malfunctions. I was concerned as she had grown quite a bit since they measured her. The princess received a trophy for three years of participation and announced she is now retired from dance,we'll see if she decides to come out of retirement as she has done in the past

We took captain chaos to White Castle for post theater snacks. She likes the pink lemonade,he likes everything else. She was tired and kept insisting I was lost, I wasn't.

The princess keeps asking me to get pink lemons at the grocery store. She just doesn't want to accept the fact that there is no such thing. we will have a quiet inside day,we're all pooped and need to recharge our batteries for the parents vs kids kickball game Monday and kindergarten graduation Tuesday.

Going to do make another batch of chocolate shortbread, some oven fried chicken for dinner and watch the Mets game. Decided to skip the Big Apple Circus this weekend due weather and U.S. Open traffic concerns.

A special shout out to Patti O', Studio 24 and The Fish Store for their generous support.

The dress rehearsal

The Princess had a very busy day. First there was the Father's day program at school then off to the dress rehearsal.

Dad tells me the princess recited a poem she had composed for him in front of the class. "Dad, I love you. Happy Father's Day. You are a boy." This was not part of the program, some good old kindergarten improvisation.

The students were allowed to wear hats yesterday as part of a "Hats On Day" fundraiser. The princess had a great straw hat,she placed it on her father's head, teacher took a picture. I need a copy of that. For more infomation about "Hats On Day" visit http://www.childrenwithcancer.org/?page_id=95

Here's the only video I was able to capture. The recital has a No Flash Photography or Video Policy. Enjoy.

Let Prishie get used to the day.

The princess first words of the day "Let Prishie get used to the day." I'm still waiting to get used the day and it's bedtime.

I'm looking for a twirling ballerina musical jewelry box for the princess. She' got her recital this weekend. Three years of dance school, she'll be getting an award. I want to give her a little something that will last longer than the requiste flowers. I'll have to look in Wal Mart or K-Mart or someplace.

There's a father's day event tomorrow at school, can't wait to hear about it from dad. the dress rehearsal is tomorrow afternoon and with any luck I'll have some better video on you tube over the weekend.

I've become a fan of the new show on USA Royal Pains, saw Mark Feuerstein on The View a few weeks ago; check it out if you haven't done do yet

The fifth and final of the Scholastic mommy blogs http://www.likemerchantships.org/ There are a lot of great household tips. Simple layout that's not overwhelming.

The sounds of snoring...at least I hope so

The princess has retired for the evening. She was certainly ready, cranked as she puts it.

Sometimes I think she would give Ian Falconer's Olivia a run for her money. If those stories hadn't been published before she was born I'd swear he'd met her, seriously.

Now getting back to the remaining mommy blogs from Scholastic Parent & Child.

Next on my list momisodes http://www.momisodes.com. Spiffy looking site, authentic honest content.

Three down,two to go.

In the princess' own words O Night.

Random act of kindness

Wanted to share this with all of you. Went to get some quick lunch. While waiting for my order, a woman was digging through her purse to get enough change to pay for her meal. Apparently she hadn't read the sign on the door that the credit/debit terminals were out of service. The young man that was working the counter offered to pay for her order, even took out his wallet. She did manage to find enough change to cover the meal but it was refreshing to see a teenager that cared about someone other than himself. Kudos to Anthony, hope he goes far in life.

Flag day celebration

The school had a flag day program today. The children were given small paper American flags. There was one thing however I found rather disturbing about the flags. "Made In China" was printed along the bottom. of one of the stripes. Need I say more?

Amusing things I heard today : "The shirt bit me ma!" and "I am made of candy floss and I WILL melt"The princess started singing one of the songs for kindergarten graduation program. The melody is New York, New York. "Start spreading the news, we're leaving today..."She stopped claiming she'd forgotten the rest of the words. I don't believe that for a New York minute. She then started singing "Gotta have a gimmick" from Gypsy. Today she was Tessie Tura.

72 Cheesebugers,please

I did a drive by deposit at the bank this afternoon. When the teller asked me what I wanted to do the princess replied "I want 72 cheeseburgers, please." Well the teller must have been cracking up as she made an error on my deposit that I did not discover right away. Now,don't go thinking she put too much in my account like what occured in Australia a while back.

While working today I was unceremoniously detained by an accountant who was attempting to purchase tickets to the very concert I wrote of yesterday. When he returned to conclude our meeting I inquired as to if he was successful and when could I expect to receive my tickets; we both had a good laugh

The second blog I reviewed was Is There Salsa in China http://www.salsainchina.blogspot.com Another very amusing blog. Check it out.

It's a Pink Day

It's a pink day according to the princess. She wished to have a complete pink outfit, certainly possible. She suggested I wear pink as well. I'm not in a pink mood today,I'm thinking something a bit darker, perhaps brown or blue.

The princess had a copy of Scholastic's Parent & Child June/July issue in her backpack the other day. (Sorry no bagel with turkey taste.) I am reading the article about the winners of the mommy blogger awards. I plan to visit each of the winning blogs over the next couple of days.

I read some of the posts from http://themeaneastmom.blogspot.com. She sounds as if she's having just as much fun as I am.

The princess has informed me that the students have taken over the school and run all the adults off. She told me that some first grader that could cook prepared today's lunch of blueberry pie. Guess they ran out of bagels with turkey taste. The things she thinks of,LOL,must be the company she keeps.

plotting & planning

Field day was simply fabulous. Kindergarteners tug of war was nothing short of spectacular. The pink princess was at the end of the rope. I was holding my breath hoping she wouldn't get crushed if the rest of the kids fell back. They did, but she managed to get away.

My pda is going to spontaneously combust. Too many days with things to do...not enough hours in the day to get them done. Between dress rehearsals, the recital and graduation I'm hard pressed to squeeze in a play date or two. Oh and maybe even get some work done.

A girls night out with the mommy mafia would really be a treat; plotting and planning. Got a few surprises up my sleeve for the princess too.Need to get some tickets for the Big Apple Circus, a Mets game and Paul McCartney. Plotting and planning, time to go trolling on eBay.

Raisins for breakfast

Feeling somewhat evil today. 4hrs of sleep just doesn't quite cut it anymore. The princess was up earlier than usual and decided I should be up as well; she is relentless sometimes.A character trait she did not get from me.

I received a message from Wretched Harpie,I'll will share it "National Geographic snippets right at your fingertips...amazing! I'm just now finding out how to navigate this information superhighway. Somebody please tell me which exit to get off!" You can check out but you can never leave.

Checking my list for the princess' field day,aka kindergartners gone wild. Everything looks to be in order.

The princess reads

A very eventful day. Full day of work for me,full day of school for the princess.

Dance school photos. Full costume, hair, make up, accessories and yes, rain. Trying to get the princess ready is always fun, dressing a Ferrel cat might be easier.

Having a Starbucks in lieu of food for lunch kept me going.

While waiting at the BK drive through the princess asked me what the sign "Let us know what you think?" meant. Surprised at first by her inquiry I quickly realized she had just read one of the stickers on the window. I explained the sign, we then continued on our adventure.

The T shirt is not pink,it's yellow

The princess came home today with the shirt for field day. Yellow, not pink but not bad either.

All ready for the recital photos tomorrow afternoon. Costume, accessories, makeup and rain in the forecast.

Will leave you today with some of my profound wisdom: Multi-tasking is highly overrated. I prefer to screw one thing up at a time. ;-)

The princess wears prada,ok not really

The pink princess is well, a princess. She prefers to wear a dress or skirt, preferably pink every day. It's not always practical but try to explain this to her. Those of you that know her understand completely. My little fashionista. Must have been all that Lily Pulitzer and Baby Lulu I put on her. I let her watch some of The Devil Wears Prada. She loves the clothes and Anne Hathaway.

Recital photos with full makeup are this week. The princess still hasn't accepted the fact that the costume is not pink. Field day is next week. Can't wait to see what color the t-shirt is; I suspect it wont be pink.

Wild thing, show tunes and shortbread.

The pink princess is nearing full recital mode. She's practicing the routine (sans taps shoes) when she thinks nobody's looking.

She's also imitating Baby June from Gypsy. Let me entertain you...

Tried a different shortbread recipe tonight. Not as good as the last batch.

She informed me tonight that she does not care to have room with a balcony when we go on our next adventure. Good, she wont be disappointed.

bagels with turkey taste

The pink princess buys school lunch most days. The school has a few choices each day. She sometimes chooses the bagel & turkey lunch. The first time she did this she had the uneaten bagel in her back pack. She told me "I have a bagel for you with turkey taste on it." I was puzzled at first, then I realized what she had done, eaten the turkey but not the bagel

Last night while choosing the simply perfect pink outfit for today she commented on the crowd at the Mets game. She said there were no empty seats for us to sit in. LOL. She must think the seats you see on TV are the only ones in Citi Field. I guess she expects to go to a game and be on TV.

Trying to collect a few last minute ads for the recital program. There is still time to place one, lmk asap. Thanks to all who have.

The princess and I will be having a contest starting June 1st for the faithful followers, join today so you don't miss out. Details will be forthcoming.

Dream Vacation

Starting to think about our next family adventure. Trying to decide between a trip to the mouse or another cruise. The princess seems to like the cruise idea(she does have half a vote), as for me I am undecided. Will have to start some serious looking at all the choices.

Would like to know what your dream vacation might be so I've added another poll.

The play date packed six day holiday weekend is over(yes I said six),time to return to reality. Tomorrow is another exciting installment of kindergarten chaos.Wardrobe selection for the princess will be coming up shortly.

Hope you enjoyed the videos, sorry the quality is not better. Will be updating those in the days to come. Got to go make some grilled cheese sandwiches,an unparalleled culinary achievement if I say so myself. Pannini has got nothing on me! Come back soon

Baking therapy & swiss cheese with no holes

Baked shortbread from scratch without the use of any power tools. Came out really good, but then anything with 1/2 lb of butter is going to taste good. Paula Deen would be so proud of me.

Now how am I going to get my 5yr old to keep her sunglasses on. It's not like I can glue them on her or anything.

She just announced that she will not eat swiss cheese unless it has holes in it and I should put holes in it before I give it to her again. Like that's going to happen anytime soon.

My daughter is flinging her clothes at me...duck! The pink princess is beginning to show her dark side.
